The Ring of Kerry Story
Out at the very edge of Europe, on South West Ireland’s wild Atlantic seaboard, the Ring of Kerry circles the Iveragh Peninsula. The Ring is one of Ireland’s best-known attractions. And with good reason, for it takes visitors through magnificent natural beauty. But it’s the lovely contrast between the warmth of the people and the elemental nature of the place that makes it so special, and worth slowing down to explore.
There’s the human scale of small towns, little villages and straid bhaile (tiny settlements) linked by the Ring, with a long history of welcoming visitors. Then there’s the scale of nature, across the Ring: at Iveragh’s heart is Ireland’s highest mountain range and highest peak, Corrán Tuathail – part of an ancient glacial landscape that ranks among the best in Europe. Inland, the Ring crosses Killarney National Park – with heart-stopping views of lakes and peaks, waterfalls, ancient woods of oak and yew, and Ireland’s only herd of wild native red deer. Rare white-tailed sea eagles drift overhead. To the west, seals ‘pup’ in sheltered Kenmare Bay. And on the shores of Valentia Island are the Tetrapod tracks – the earliest fossil footprints in the world.
Further west still, out to sea, is an extraordinary, far-flung place of pilgrimage: Skellig Michael – one of the wonders of the world. 1300 years ago, early Christian monks built a remarkable hermitage at the top of this jagged ocean crag – then at the furthest limits of the known world. This mysterious and awe-inspiring place – described by George Bernard Shaw as “part of our dream world” – is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. It can be reached (for a sometimes life-changing visit) by the adventurous on a small boat, only when the weather allows.
You can “do the Ring” within a day. But the Ring will truly reveal itself if you take the time to lose yourself down byways, to stand wind-buffeted on clifftops, to watch the cloudshadows on distant mountains, to sit by a peat fire in a local pub, to wander on wide sandy beaches, to stride out on the long-distance Kerry Way, to taste the local soda bread and fresh seafood, to soak up the traditional music, the ancient history, the stories, the gaeilge … These are the things that make memories. Iveragh and the Ring have a way of putting things into perspective. Of reminding us of how small we are … in a good way. Of soothing the mind and touching the soul. At the Edge of the World.
The Malton, located in Killarney town centre, and just minutes drive from the starting point of the Ring of Kerry route, is the ideal hotel base for you to discover the Majestic Ring of Kerry. Our Concierge can book you on a scheduled daily coach tour of the Ring of Kerry or provide maps and “must see” places of interest along the way if you wish to drive. ”The Ring”, (110 miles/177 kms in distance), is a fabulous and unforgettable day trip to add to your itinerary. Our resident head beautician Martina has put together the following home tips to help you get your feet looking fabulous for these glorious summer days….
Firstly add a half a cup of Epsom salts & 2 drops of lavender oil to a foot spa or basin & soak for 5 minutes or so, this will help to drain away toxins and remove aches and pains. Dry your feet completely and especially between your toes to prevent any cracking. Wrap some cotton wool around the top end of an orange wood stick and gently push back cuticles. Epsom sales, orange sticks and essential oil can all be purchased from your local pharmacy/health store or good supermarket.
Mix a handful of the Epsom salts with some grape seed oil and 2 drops of any essential oil of choice. Mix to a porridge like consistency. Apply scrub all over both feet, massage in well and wash off. (This also makes a great body scrub). You may also need a foot file to remove any extra hard skin that has built up on certain areas.
Always cut nails straight across with a toe nail clippers to prevent ingrowing toe nails and file straight across in the one direction.
A great cream for cracked feet is Flexitol ‘heal balm’ which can be purchased from any pharmacy. Apply a euro sized amount to each foot and rub into all areas especially outside the ball of the foot and along outside of foot and heel. The area under the ball of the foot and along the arch is a great place to massage to help work out tired spots.
Get some nail varnish remover, cotton pads and remove all the cream from nails. Roll a tissue and place between each toe; this is far more hygienic and more comfortable than toe separators. Apply a base coat, 2 thin layers of nail colour and a top coat. Leave time between each layer to allow them to dry completely or they will smudge! You could do this while catching up with us on Facebook!
A cotton bud soaked in nail varnish remover will remove any excess nail polish that surrounds the nail. Leave nails dry for 30 minutes or so and remove tissues. Leave toes air dry for at least another hour.
Regards to your feet!
